San Francisco based rapper greyxeyes has plans to release a new EP later this year, but in the meantime, we were given the pleasure of reviewing the most recent single, “My Own Worst Enemy(Becoming Me)”. The track begins with a wavy guitar intro, and a slight, heartbeat sounding bass drum beat. The first thing I noticed after the intro is the post-hardcore/ pop punk sounding vocals. Commonly unheard of in the rap genre, this was a nice change. As someone who is a huge fan of the post hardcore wave of the early 2010s, this automatically drew me right in. The lyrics tell a powerful story of someone struggling with the pain of existing, chemical addiction, mental illness, sadness, and just overall trying to numb the pain, essentially stating that the writer has succumbed to their demons, yet again. The lyrical content is heartfelt, emotional, moving, and heartbreaking all at once. The beats in the track are reminiscent of the “emo trap” styles of guardin, Flowers for You, Lil Peep, Juice WRLD, and more. Emo trap blends sad lyrics, harsh vocals, guitar riffs, with a rap beat, hence the name, ‘emo trap.’ In addition to this, the flow of the distant voice of Grey mixes into this beat perfectly, making the perfect blend of dreamy and emotional. This track drew me in from the very beginning, and only kept me wanting more as I listened. It’s perfect for late nights in the dark, drives, or just sitting on your deck reminiscing on past days that were both better and worse. So, don’t be uncool, check out greyxeyes today, you won’t be disappointed!
